Overthinking
“Put your thoughts to sleep. Do not let them cast a shadow over the moon of your heart. Let go of thinking” – Rumi
Hi Friend!
I used to be a pro at this one and I am sure many can relate to that feeling.
Do you ever walk away from a conversation with no idea how it went? You aren’t sure if you were friendly enough or if you said the right thing. It’s enough to send your insecurities into overdrive. For the rest of the day, you may find your thoughts fixated on what you said — and what you could have said instead.
Replaying a conversation in your head is a classic example of overthinking, and everyone’s guilty of it.
It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to to stop worrying entirely. But when you overthink everything and feel anxious and insecure about your decisions, it’s time to make some changes.
My mission statement provides valuable insights into techniques that can help quiet the constant chatter of our minds, which is often at the root of overthinking.
Mission to Overcoming Overthinking: CONNECTION
Cultivate emotional well-being: Overthinking often leads to increased stress, anxiety, and a sense of being overwhelmed. I place emphasize how important it is to cultivate emotional well-being, as it encourages us to find strategies that promote inner peace and mental clarity, which are essential for managing overthinking.
GRADITUDE and CONNECTION generate change: Shifting our focus from the worries swirling in our minds to a place of GRADITUDE can interrupt negative thought patterns and create a more positive emotional state. Similarly, CONNECTING with others can provide support, encouragement, and a sense of perspective, helping us move from a place of rumination to action.
Strategies for Overcoming Overthinking:
Practice Mindfulness: Engage in practices like meditation or deep breathing exercises to become more aware of your thoughts in the present moment without judgment. This can help you detach from the cycle of overthinking.
Challenge Negative Thoughts: When you catch yourself overthinking, examine the validity of those thoughts. Are they based on facts or assumptions? Challenge negative thought patterns and reframe them in a more balanced and realistic light.
Focus on Solutions: Instead of dwelling on problems, shift your energy towards finding solutions. Break down overwhelming situations into smaller, manageable steps that you can take action on.
Set Boundaries with Worry: Designate a specific time and place for "worry time." When worries arise outside of that designated period, gently remind yourself that you'll address them during your scheduled time
CONNECT with Nature: Spending time in nature has been shown to have calming effects on the mind and body. Engage your senses—notice the sights, sounds, and smells around you—to help ground yourself in the present moment.
Cultivate GRADITUDE: Take time each day to reflect on things you're grateful for. This practice can shift your focus away from worries and towards a more positive and appreciative outlook.
Seek Support When Needed: If you find yourself struggling to manage overthinking, don't hesitate to seek support from a a friend or coach. They can provide guidance and tools to help you develop healthy coping mechanisms.
Remember, overcoming overthinking is a process that requires patience and practice. By incorporating these strategies into your daily life and drawing upon the principles of my mission—cultivating emotional well-being, GRADITUDE, and CONNECTION—you can begin to quiet your mind, find greater peace, and move forward with clarity and purpose.
